How to Choose Clothing for Your Children - Tips For Women

The dilemma of buying children\’s clothing begins even before your child is born. After having a baby, women usually receive some clothes as baby gifts. Often these are small sizes that your child will outgrow very soon. So you can see that buying clothes is an ongoing task for parents.

As an infant, a baby will change sizes every few weeks. Buy durable clothing in washable, comfortable fabrics. Babies have many accidents so you\’ll need to buy clothes that are easy to clean. If you use bright colors instead of pastels, they will not soil or stain as easily. When shopping for children\’s clothes, many women seek high-quality clothing. But if you?re on a tight budget, you can always wait for clothing store sales at places such as Gap, Old Navy, Disney Baby, or Babies R Us.

Bargain Seekers

With the knowledge that a child will outgrow their clothing quickly, some women go thrift shopping and check garage sales. Many times these clothes are barely worn and may even look almost new. Thrift shopping is a good way to find children\’s brand name clothing without paying the full price. Sometimes clothing for boys in larger sizes is harder to find at these sources because of the wear and tear. Finding clothing for girls may be a bit easier. The key to finding great clothes at a bargain is to shop often. Visit your local thrift shop once a week and frequent yard sales in your area.

Yard sales are even better than thrift stores in some ways because you can bargain with the seller. Try picking out a bundle of clothing and other items; then make an offer for the entire bundle. You might be surprised at how little you will pay for items. Also, check for bargains through the newspaper classifieds. Occasionally, you\’ll see offerings for children\’s clothing directly through the ads.

Preparing for Ever-Changing Sizes and Needs

When your child gets to the toddler stage, clothing needs will change. During and after potty training, separate tops and bottoms will be more practical. Dresses and pull-on pants make training easier and encourage the toddler to be independent. Buy clothes that are easy to put on and take off so your toddler can learn to dress himself. You will need to buy good shoes that are comfortable. When fitting shoes, allow a half-inch in front of the toes when standing and make sure the heel fits properly.

If you have younger children of the same gender but different ages, or if you plan to have another baby soon, keep unsoiled clothing put away for the next child. This will save you money, and younger children usually never know the difference. Store the clothing in a dry, tightly sealed plastic container to keep mice and moths out. Include a fabric sheet to keep the clothes smelling fresh.

Buying Children\’s Clothing for School

When your child starts school, clothing needs will again change. At this time, your child may want to help pick out clothes. Before you go shopping for clothes, have your child try on last year\’s clothes and see what can still be worn. Then look for clothing that is comfortable, washable, and easy to keep clean. Many mothers choose children\’s clothing that is simple with large buttons and has zippers with pulls, elastic waists, and large neck openings. Buy clothes that are appropriate and safe. Avoid big legs, loose ribbons or sashes, and slippery shoes. Even if you can\’t afford expensive fashionable clothes, choose basic clothing in colors and styles your child likes.

Watch for store sales on school clothing and save money if your state has tax-free shopping days. In the winter, dress your child in layers. While they are outdoors they can wear their coats, hats, gloves, and scarves. Inside, they can also wear layers to remove if they become uncomfortable. A sweatshirt over a button-up shirt or a t-shirt under a button-up shirt will provide this option. Many women with smaller children choose clothing that will be easy to remove when going to the bathroom. The teachers always appreciate this!

Remember that some styles may be cute and very stylish but not comfortable or practical. Look at women\’s magazines to get ideas, or talk to other mother\’s that have more experience with children?s clothing to make the best choices.

Baby You’re a Star - Getting Your Child Involved in Modeling

“Your Baby is so cute; he/she should be a model!” If you’re the proud parent of a baby who receives these compliments on a daily basis, chances are you have thought about a modeling career for your youngster. While modeling can be a great start to even better career opportunities in the future, it can also be a dead end leaving you with a negative bank account. Regardless of what you want to achieve by having your baby become a model, there are some things that you need to know before they make it to the big screen, or at least the cover of a magazine.

  • Is your baby model material?

If your child is the happy go lucky, laughs at everything, easy to get along with type, you’re in luck. Baby modeling agencies are in search of babies who are easy to work with. That rules out babies who are cranky, shy, or less than happy most of the time. If your baby fits into the latter category modeling may not be right for at this point in their life.

  • Are you a “model” parent?

Don’t think that your baby will be doing all the work. No matter how cute their smile may be, modeling agencies know that where your baby goes you follow, and rightfully so. Accredited agents want to make sure you are doing what’s in the best interest for your baby. They will shy away from contracting children if the parents are over bearing or hard to work with. There is a thin line between watching out for your baby’s best interests and becoming an overbearing set nightmare.

  • Are you willing to sacrifice?

Not many aspiring models, babies included, get their big break right away. Being the proud parents of a baby model takes a lot of sacrificing and patience. While you may make money in the long run, in the beginning you will have to find and agent and go to shoots which may require you to pay for traveling arrangements or take time off of work. You need to be willing and even more importantly able, to make sacrifices knowing that they won’t always pay off in the long run.

If you still think you and your baby have what it takes to pursue a modeling career, congratulations and best of luck! To make sure your baby has all the opportunities that are available, and that those opportunities are legitimate, you should consider finding a modeling agency to represent your little star. There are plenty of great modeling agencies out there, however, there is also an equal amount if not more that are out for their own monetary gain and can leave your wallets empty or even worse your baby in harm’s way. Here is what you need to look for when finding an agent.

  • Ask Around: If you’re not sure where to start your search, you may want to consider contacting local department stores, retailers, and media companies (radio and television) to find out what agencies they use. Large businesses will most likely enjoy the work of experienced agents who don’t make it a habit of ripping parents off. Keep a list of names, contacts and other information that the stores give you. If you find that there is one or two that keep popping up on the list, consider calling those places first.
  • Accreditation: It’s important to make sure any agency you considering taking your child to is well accredited. A modeling agency is no different from any other type of business and therefore you should be able to verify their integrity by checking with the Better Business Bureau. If you already have a few agencies in mind check with the BBB to find out if they are credible. If you’re not sure where to start, ask them for a list of baby modeling or just modeling agencies in your area.
  • Never Pay Upfront: If the modeling agency you are considering requires you to pay upfront then walk right back out the door. A modeling agency will never require you to pay up front and ones that do are often illegitimate and out to get your hard earned cash. The majority, if not all modeling agencies, operate on a commission basis, which means when your baby gets the job, they get paid.
  • Bring Your Own Photos: While you may want to go to your local photography center and get some professional pictures of your baby taken to use in a portfolio, the agency its self will never require you to pay for your child to get pictures. Once again, if this happens the company is most likely not legitimate and only wants your money. Walk away quickly before your pockets are emptied.
  • Practice Caution: If you go to an agency and it doesn’t feel right, leave. Your instincts are usually a good way to judge an agency and if you’re not comfortable then chances are something is not right. This is also true for internet modeling agencies. In today’s day and age there are many people out there who want to take your money or exploit your child. Make sure that the people you’re exposing your children too are not out to hurt them and are working for a legitimate business.

Educational Baby Toys Which Are Safe And Fun To Play With

When it comes to your baby, toys should be of the highest quality and combine education with fun! Finding good infant toys can be a little problematic, though, when you consider the fact that not only should they be enjoyable and educational, they should also be safe. Whether you are buying a gift for niece or a nephew, or you are looking for something for your own son or daughter, make sure that you only purchase toys that you know are safe.

Wooden toys for babies are one way to make sure that your child does not have issues with small parts. With wooden toys, you also know that they will be durable; unlike plastic toys, they will not splinter or break into smaller parts. When you are looking for infant toys, one of the best toys you can start out with are wooden blocks. Far from being old fashioned or simple, wooden blocks facilitate all sorts of developmental baby games. You will find that your child is practicing hand-eye coordination as well as building up fine motor control when he or she builds up the blocks. You also foster a sense of creativity and industry when you buy your baby a set of blocks. Some blocks even come with painted letter designs, allowing your child to become familiar with the alphabet and with the written language.

Wooden puzzles are another way that baby toys can be educational. Think about large bulky wooden puzzle pieces. They will be a lot harder to lose and a great deal less frustrating for your child than smaller, more fragile cardboard puzzles. This is an excellent way to begin working with child when it comes to logical thinking and problem solving skills. Every child loves the end result of the finished puzzle and you can be sure that yours will enjoy having you help them put it together.

When looking for educational baby toys, also take a look at soft toys. Babies naturally gravitate towards soft toys, especially if they are colorful, and this is a great time to start teaching your child about colors. One wonderful toy for a baby is a set of stuffed trucks and cars. You can have your child start to identify these things as well as work with him or her colors and different sizes. Soft toys are also usually a good idea for children because they cannot hurt themselves on them. Your baby will be able to play as roughly as they please without the risk of having those toys break. Similarly, you can find soft toys that your child can build with, or that she can stack. Like the wooden toys mentioned above, she will be learning fine motor control and in the case of the soft toys, there will be less chance that she will injure herself on a sharp edge.

When you are looking for baby toys, remember that education and fun are not mutually exclusive. Check out wooden toys for babies and come up with your own developmental baby games!

Best 6 Pacifier Safety Tips

Although not all babies take to pacifiers, pacifiers are generally a great source of comfort for most babies. In any case, if you do choose to get a pacifier for your baby, there are a couple of safety tips that you need to consider.

Don’t Accessorize

Most pacifiers that have been directly released by companies have been made with an eye on safety features. The worst mistake that any parent could do would be to accessorize pacifiers or buy ones that have been modified or accessorized.

Examples of these decorated pacifiers are those with decorative stick on jewels or dangling attachments on the pacifier guard or handle. Pacifiers of this kind being sold by merchants have already been recalled but some parents might still attempt to do the decorating themselves. Decorations on a pacifier could become detached and may become choking hazards.

Never Attach on Baby

Pacifiers can easily fall off from a baby’s mouth. Parents can sometimes be tempted to attach this using a pin, or with a chain or string around the baby’s neck. Resist the urge to do this. Your baby could find a way to open a regular pin and get injured or worse, he might just ingest a detached pin. A string or ribbon on the other hand could become entangled and could strangle your baby.

Check the Pieces

There are one piece and multiple piece pacifiers that can be assembled. Regardless of whatever the type or model of pacifier you get, make sure that you always check that the pieces are firmly attached. You should test the nipple in particular by tugging at it. A teething baby might suck too aggressively and detach the nipple, thus making it a choking hazard. Watch out for recalled models especially among multiple piece pacifiers.

Do Not Make Your Own

Just as it is not safe to attach decorations to your pacifier, it is also not safe to modify anything into a pacifier. Do not attempt to reconfigure old nipples or pacifier parts into another pacifier. Your creation might not hold together well enough, and you may thus end up with a bunch of choking hazards. Store sold pacifiers have been carefully designed and tested to withstand repeated sucking and biting and should therefore be the only items that can be safely used.

Steer Clear of Liquid-Filled Pacifiers

Although it happens rarely with liquid-filled pacifiers, still, your baby could bite through the nipple and get all the liquid out. You should also avoid coating pacifiers with sugar, honey or anything sweet. This would encourage your baby to gnaw harder on a pacifier and may bite through it or develop an attachment for it.

Buy Standard Size

Standard-sized pacifiers usually have a stopper or shield that is more than one inch across an average baby’s mouth. This is to prevent your baby from ingesting the whole pacifier and choking on it. The shield however should have small holes on each side to allow moisture out and air onto your baby’s skin.

Is Your Baby Trying To Tell You Something?

Babies are so amazing. They totally have us fooled letting us think we have all the power. But that not true, they are so much smarter than we give them credit for. Let’s talk about communication with you and your baby.

Even the youngest baby can communicate with you. They use their own language that comes to them naturally. They learn by your response to their little sounds and actions. By responding to their coos and cries, they learn that you are listening to them and are there to take care of their needs. Your communication provides them comfort and security.

Babies have both verbal and non-verbal language. Their non-verbal would be their facial expressions, legs becoming tight or rigid, their eyes, rubbing their eyes when they are tired, and turning their head to find food. These are all ways that they communicate a need or want to you. You have to be pretty observant to notice these cues. If these are not recognized, then your baby will then learn to give you his or her verbal cues. We all know these, crying, screaming, whimpering, laughing, etc… There are ways to determine what your baby is trying to tell you as well through their crying. I will go into this in another article.

Our favorite form of communication with your baby is when they coo. We all love to hear that beautiful little sound they make. When you make a sound, they try to mimic you, and what an accomplishment for them when they hear themselves make a sound like yours. Even the facial expressions that they mimic from you are their way of learning a new language.

Speak to your baby naturally. As you are interacting, describe everything you are doing and tell him/her what they are feeling or experiencing. They will soon learn to understand what you are saying long before they are able to speak. Point out things to them, talk about it, have them touch their nose and say “nose”, have them feel your face and tell them what they are feeling and seeing.

Music is an incredible way to teach them, especially when you sing to them. It does not matter if you think you can sing or not, your baby doesn’t care. All they know is they are listening to a beautiful, soft melody from their mother.

Read to them as often as you can. Look at picture books, they do not need to be cartoon drawings, they love any type of picture. Discuss with your baby what he/she is looking at. Another favorite thing for them are photographs of loved ones in the family. You can paste some on cardboard and hold it up for them to study and see. They will love looking at the familiar faces over and over again. Name the people in the photos and describe what they are doing.

Your baby will soon be talking on their own and be telling you all about their little world. In the meantime, build that communication and that bond with your baby. You will both be forever blessed.

Is My Baby Ever Going To Crawl?

To first answer that question, your baby may not crawl in the typical manner. Babies are so unique and have their own wonderful personalities. Some are anxious to just take off, and there are those that are just content observing life around them. Whatever the case may be, you, as the parent should not worry about it.

It is so hard to not compare your baby to others and to the averages of development milestones. Just realize that the charts are just stereotypical behavior. Your baby is unique and has his own way of doing things.

The average age a baby starts to crawl is 6 to 10 months, but I use the world average loosely. Since more babies are put to sleep on their back, due to the AAP back-sleeping campaign, babies are crawling at a later stage or skipping it all together. This is compared to 20 years ago when babies were put to sleep on their sides or stomachs.

This is nothing you need to worry about. The risk of SIDS has dropped significantly due to this campaign. You need to make sure your baby has plenty of “tummy-time” to build up their upper body muscles that are used in crawling. There are many ways you can help your baby to build up their upper body strength.

You may find that your baby’s first crawling experience may be something totally out of the ordinary and have you wondering what’s going on. Well, no need to worry there either. Just smile and see you baby learn to discover his or her world in their own way. Some babies may scoot, dragging themselves across the floor, and then there are those that may do the “bum-shuffle”, just shuffling their bum across the floor using their legs to propel them. Then there are those that just prefer to roll to their destination across the floor. You may find yourself quite amused watching your baby discover new ways of getting around.

You don’t need to hurry him, just provide a safe place for him to explore. Spend time with your baby on the floor, placing toys just out of his reach. Lay on the floor in front of him, inviting him to come to you, he will feel the excitement and want to figure out a way to get to you. You can also place your hand or something behind his feet, and as he starts to move his legs, he will realize that he can propel himself forward. If being on his tummy is uncomfortable for him, or hard to hold his head up, you can place a soft rolled towel or something under his chest to help him keep his head up.

Just realize all you need to do is provide a safe and loving environment where your baby will flourish and develop at a healthy pace. Just enjoy this stage of his life and realize that this too will pass by quickly and will be gone. Too many parents feel that their baby needs to be the first to reach every milestone and that somehow this is a sign of intelligence or superiority. This is a myth and should be treated as such. Enjoy every moment with your baby, it will be gone sooner than you expect.

If your baby does not ever crawl, this is ok too. Just find ways to help you baby find new ways to discover their world. There is no evidence that they suffer in any of their motor-skill functions, just as long as you are giving them plenty of opportunities to build up their muscles.

How Can I Keep My Baby Safe While Traveling?

Do you think about what could happen to your baby if you were in an accident? Have you seen the news and heard how many babies are killed because they are not properly buckled in a car seat? How many times have you seen an adult holding a child in their lap or a small child standing up the back seat? I don’t know about you, but that makes me sick to look at. I have known of parents or family members who have lost an infant or toddler just because the baby was not safely secured in the car. Why would we want to even take this risk? Why put a helpless infant in harms way? Well, we are going to discuss how to keep your baby safe. Protect the most precious cargo you will ever put inside your car.

The number one way to keep your baby safe while traveling is a federally regulated and inspected car seat. Never, ever put your baby on your lap or lay them on the seat, no matter how short of a distance you intend to go. There are so many children killed because they were not securely fastened in a car seat. Choosing a car seat can be so confusing with so many types to choose from. Every car seat sold has been set by the federal safety guidelines. There are certain factors that need to be looked at when you are choosing one. You need to include your baby’s age, height, weight, use, price and the style. You will find that the more expensive car seats are upgraded with better padding and fabric and extra safety features such as side impact protection.

Now, we as parents know that traveling anywhere with a baby are very difficult to say the least. There are some great items to help you protect your baby and make your job a bit easier too. To name a few, there are seats that you can place in the shopping carts; they come in disposable type too. How handy would it be to have a travel potty seat for your toddler? I am always so amazed at what there is available for moms and babies these days.

Strollers are the most used item you will ever purchase for your baby, next to the car seat of course. There are so many to choose from, but there are a few tips to help narrow down your search. What is going to be your main purpose for the stroller? Strollers come in 5 different categories, some are easy to maneuver, some easy to pack in your car, and some are bulkier but more comfortable for your baby. There are strollers that you can attach your car seat to. There are double strollers, also known as tandem strollers for twins or a mom with two little ones in tow. Then last, there are strollers for jogging moms that like to take the baby out on the trail with them. There are also numerous accessories for every type of stroller.

Another way to keep your baby safe with you when you are traveling is a baby carrier. These also come in so many types that it is difficult to choose from. These come in handy when you are going camping and doing some hiking, or maybe you are taking the kids to the zoo and you don’t want to bother with the stroller. There are some moms who wear them around the house or even working in the yard. It is just another way to keep your baby with you while allowing your arms and hands to be free. Safety is always a concern no matter where you are. One final idea for you is to have a small first aid kit or medical bag for your baby, one for your home and one for your car. You can put these together yourself or they can be purchased all ready to travel with you. Be safe and enjoy your travels.

How Can I Keep My Baby Safe In My Home?

Your baby is crawling now; a whole new world has been opened up to him. He is on a treasure hunt like never before. He will find objects, nooks and crannies, loose wires, and maybe even bugs. Yuck! Now you can stop everything you are doing while he is awake, get down on the floor and follow him wherever he goes. Make sure you prevent him from touching that plug, or pulling on that cord, oh watch out for the corner of the table…ouch! You and I both know this would be impossible to do and keep your sanity in check.

Or, you could just keep him in his playpen all day. Yes, he will get mad and very bored, and no, he will not learn as much because he is not able to explore his world. So, we know this is not a viable option either. I guess the best answer to that question would be to “baby proof” your home. There are so many tools available for you to protect your baby. I will go over a few things and give you some ideas of what might work for your home.

An item that every new parent should have is a baby monitor. I was surprised to find such a huge variety. There is the traditional baby monitor that transmits sound from baby to you, then there is a digital monitor that reaches a farther distance and gives you’re a much clearer sound. Then the most impressive monitor is the color video monitor. You are able to look in on your baby without going to his crib. You can see him lying there safe and sound, or you can see that he may be in trouble. Either way, you have the peace of mind knowing that you are aware of your baby at every moment.

Home safety items are very important in protecting your baby by preventing accidents from happening. If you are not in a position to totally remove all the furniture from your living room, or the room where your baby likes to play, then you may want to consider putting corner protectors on your furniture. There are outlet covers to keep baby from sticking things in the outlet, which by the way seems to be a huge fascination for every baby. You can add anchors to furniture that can easily be toppled over, things to wind up extra cords. There are cabinet locks to keep baby out of the cupboards and hurting himself with toxic chemicals or even pulling out heavy items that may hurt him. Safety in the nursery would include a teether that snaps onto your baby’s crib rail, an outlet cord with a cord shortener, furniture safety brackets and old trick, but now improved upon, the indispensable clear grip doorknob cover.
