The short definition for a positive affirmation is, “telling the truth about yourself in advance.”
In other words, you may not yet have learned how to eliminate procrastination from your life, but if you keep affirming to yourself, “I always do the things I need to do right now. I act without delay and I get things done,” your subconscious mind will soon begin to create that reality in your brain.
Another example might be that if you lack confidence in talking to strangers or mingling in groups, and affirmation like, “I am always confident and comfortable speaking to strangers,” my not yet be true. But with repetition, that affirmation becomes software for the brain that literally “re-wires” your brain by creating new pathways among the neurons of your brain.
The result? Before long, you will find yourself in a social situation and find yourself “working the room” as if you were born with the social skills of a master. No fear, no awkward stumbling for words or things to say, like “what about this weather we\’ve been having?”
You will simply notice that you are behaving in a polished manner as you talk to people who were complete strangers before this evening.
Was this affirmation true, in the strictest sense of the word, when you first began saying it to yourself or writing it down in a notebook? Not at all, but the potential was there, and repeating that affirmation made it true.
Affirmations are self-fulfilling prophecies about we can make about ourselves. When our subconscious minds hear them repeated again and again, they become part of our thoughts, actions, habits and nature. They are one of the basic tools available to re-program and re-wire our minds in order to bring about real and lasting change in our lives.
